Metatarsal Stress Fracture in Tennis: Symptoms, Causes, Treatment & Return to Play

A metatarsal stress fracture is a small crack or area of bone injury in one of the five long bones of the forefoot. In tennis players, it usually develops gradually from repetitive impact, running, jumping, split-steps, and rapid changes of direction rather than from one major injury.

Early recognition matters. Continuing to play through localized bone pain can allow a stress reaction to progress to a more significant fracture.
